Saturday morning 18th of June. First full day of Milan fashion week. Good memories from the days before at Pitti and loads of excitement to start the fashion week madness. I haven’t been in Milan since January. I remember it to be cold and grey back then, the contrast couldn’t be greater. When summer arrives in Milan it brings color and Mediterranean spirit to the city. Between the never-ending hustle of the crowd and noise of the city you can finally find some holiday vibes. For this reason I prefer to attend the fashion weeks during this season; it adds some relaxation to it. After having my first gelato and meeting up with my photographer I was all set and ready for it to start.
This season, Milan fashion week started for me with a big welcome from Les Hommes. I was kindly invited to have lunch with all the Belgian press at Paper Moon, a well-known Italian restaurant in the heart of the fashion district of Milan. Every high-end brand has its own store in this area. In fact, I was told it is the most expensive shopping real estate area in the world. After meeting everyone and a delicious lunch everyone was prepared and excited to get to the venue.
In my full outfit of Les Hommes in was ready to walk the line to the show. Let me briefly tell you what I was wearing. My full outfit was from their Urban collection. This line is more streetstyle, younger and affordable compared to their main collection. There is actually no better word than urban to describe my outfit; light wash ripped jeans, a black T-shirt with modern graphic lines (typical Les Hommes) combined with a biker jacket. The eye catcher of the outfit was definitely my biker jacket, the color pattern and mix of different fabrics makes this jacket a unique piece to stand out from the crowd.
My outfit was on point and I was proud to be wearing Les Hommes for the first day of MFW. After my arrival at the venue I had the great opportunity to have a glimpse backstage before the show started. This was a first time experience for me and I would love to see more of this fascinating world. It was great to see how the models were being prepared and to see all the stylists doing their work. You could feel an almost electric tension in the room, I just tried to keep out of their way and enjoy a glass of champagne while the designers were giving interviews and models were being photographed for nice backstage footage. If you were following me on Snapchat you should have been able to get an impression of this energetic event.
The show was about to start, it was time for me to find my seat and sit back while the bass was pumping in my ears, the lights went on and the first models made their entrance on the runway. I’ve put a little overview of my favorite looks below this article together with a video of the whole show.
The SS17 collection of Les Hommes takes us back to the Spanish conquest of South America. The collection present oversize and loose fitting silhouettes with often double knitted shirts of different length nets. Urban military wear is present throughout the whole collection with shoulder straps or sling bags mimicking bulletproof protection. Bomber jackets and sweatshirts display metallic embroideries that combine the strictness of the decorations of the Conquistadors with nature-inspired body paint of Central America populations. The color palette consists of mimetic green, white and black. Contrasting buttons, golden or silver zippers refer to both Mayan decorations as well as military details. The models wore small piercings on their noses, lips or ears. Their looks were completed with high and low sandals punctuated with metallic studs.
Both the show and the collection left a strong impression on me. This was a perfect way to start MFW SS17. The Belgian duo designers of Les Hommes did it again and managed to put forward a unique collection, which I’m sure, will be loved by many.
