Oscars 2020: the Five Best Dressed Men

Tom Barker

The Oscars are amongst us and that means that one of the most important red carpets in showbiz has been rolled out for the elite of the acting world to show off their custom-made garments. Often a shoddy affair for menswear, a sea of conservative tuxedos fills the Dolby Theatre as most men play things safe at the awards show. The usual suspects (Billy Porter, Timothee Chalamet, Spike Lee etc.) did bring some excitement to proceedings, however.

These are our five favourite menswear looks of the Oscars 2020:

Timothee Chalamet

The internet has not been kind to Timothee Chalamet’s red carpet look this year. Normally pulling off showstopping outfits like the belted Dior suit at the Venice Film Festival, it is understandable that this Prada tracksuit is underwhelming to some, however, the poor guy can’t be menswear’s savior every time there is a red carpet event and this look with the boots and Cartier brooch on the left chest is a perfectly pulled-off smart casual look.

Rami Malek

Paying his respects to Kobe Bryant, Spike Lee wore a two-piece suit in the Lakers signature purple and gold colour with Bryant’s iconic 24 squad number attached to the lapels. Pairing this up with a pair of the athletes Nike trainers, the 62-year-old director pulled out all the stops in paying his respects to the recently deceased athlete.

Spike Lee

Paying his respects to Kobe Bryant, Spike Lee wore a two-piece suit in the Lakers signature purple and gold colour with Bryant’s iconic 24 squad number attached to the lapels. Pairing this up with a pair of the athletes Nike trainers, the 62-year-old director pulled out all the stops in paying his respects to the recently deceased athlete.

Joaquin Phoenix

This is one of the most boring black suits I have ever seen, paired with a white shirt and black bow tie then only thing that differentiated this look is the black sunglasses that Phoenix is sporting. That being said, the message of sustainability that the winner for best actor is pushing with this Stella McCarthy number makes it deserve its place on this list. Having worn this same suit to every awards ceremony this season, Phoenix is making a stand against throw away culture and the affect this has on the environment, which we can all rally behind.

John Cho

It’s difficult to find any colour amongst the men at the Oscars as the swarm of black tuxedos drowns most of it out. John Cho managed to inject some colour, however, with this beautifully tailored three-piece suit in terracotta brown which he paired with black shoes, shirt and bowtie to bring the look together. We only wish that the actor had chosen to wear some socks!
